Claude VERMETTE (1930-2006) Huile sur panneau signée, pliable à quatre volets, mesurant 13×55 pouces lorsque déployée
Painter and ceramist Claude Vermette was born in 1930 in Montreal. An artist of international reputation, Vermette distinguished himself in the art of architectural ceramics and his pictorial work testifies to a remarkable innovative spirit. He was introduced to painting in particular by artist Brother Jérôme. His first exhibitions – in 1948, 1950 and 1952 – earned him the notice of art critics who praised his talent.
Vermette’s mixed media compositions have a tendency to go beyond the descriptive values of a simple reproduction, illustration or description of nature, while they generate a wonder of transparency and light that is highly poetic and full of emotion. The use of various mediums led him to new experiments of great success giving him a rich, penetrating experience of human sensitivity in the contemporaneity of art.
During the last twenty years of his life, Vermette devoted himself mainly to painting. His works are exhibited many times both at home and abroad and are part of private, public and large corporate collections. He died in 2006.
